Roza: “Lessons beyond the classroom”

Roza is from Washington, DC, currently studying at Colgate, and was a participant in LearnServe Global Zambia 2026.

For the past two and a half weeks, I had the incredible opportunity to travel with LearnServe International on the Global Zambia exchange program. Throughout our time in Lusaka and Livingstone, we immersed ourselves in the local community, exchanged cultures, and, most importantly, worked alongside incredible organizations making a meaningful impact, including Chikumbuso, Fountain of Hope, Njira, and many others.

This experience challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone and broadened my understanding of the world through a completely different perspective. It reminded me that leadership is rooted in listening, learning, and serving alongside others.

One of the moments that had the greatest impact on me was our visit to a local clinic. As someone pursuing a future in healthcare, I was excited to see how healthcare is delivered in a different part of the world. Seeing providers care for patients with limited resources reinforced my belief that some of the most valuable lessons happen beyond the classroom. It reminded me that hands-on experiences and meaningful human connections are what truly shape compassionate healthcare professionals.

That experience also sparked a deeper interest in pursuing a gap year abroad after college. During our visit to the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, we had the opportunity to learn about the Peace Corps and hear from individuals who had served in communities around the world. Listening to their experiences made those possibilities feel tangible and inspired me to continue seeking opportunities that combine healthcare, service, and cultural exchange.

“This experience reminded me that leadership is rooted in listening, learning, and serving alongside others.”

One of the most meaningful parts of this journey was seeing my LearnServe venture, CARE2Alland4All, contribute in a small way by helping fund a portion of this trip. Watching an idea grow into something that could support experiences like this was incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed my passion for improving healthcare access and creating initiatives that give back.

Above all, Zambia reminded me of the power of connection. Every conversation, every shared meal, and every new relationship taught me that you never know where one interaction can lead. Whether through networking, collaboration, or simply taking the time to listen, people have the ability to open doors, inspire new dreams, and change the course of your future.

I leave Zambia with unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships, and a heart full of gratitude for every person who welcomed us with kindness, shared their stories, and taught me lessons I will carry for years to come.

Thank you to LearnServe International, our partner organizations, our hosts, and everyone who made this exchange possible. This journey has strengthened my commitment to healthcare, global service, and lifelong learning, and it is an experience I will carry with me forever. 🇿🇲❤️
